Tenney papers, 1884-1923.

Correspondence and diaries; correspondence, written while Tenney was in a Michigan prison, is from his family, 1884-1885, describing activities at home, their concern for their father, and Church activities. Also present is the ongoing diary Tenney maintained from 1887 to 1890 and 1901 to 1911 on his missionary activities mostly in Mexico but also southern Arizona. From 1887 to 1890, he visits the Pima Agency and relates an encounter with Presbyterian missionary Charles H. Cook, and visits Vekol, Ariz. He describes conversions, baptisms, and fellow Mormons. From 1901 to 1911, he is in Mexico and describes his mission activities. A typescript transcription is also available. There are also brief biographies of Anne Sariah Eagar and Fred A. Whiting.

Missionary, Mormon Church; Tenney participated with the southern Utah militia against the Navajos, worked with Jacob Hamblin as missionary to the Hopi in 1858, and other mission assignments in northern New Mexico and Arizona. In 1882, he was jailed for practicing polygamy. He later served in 1887 on the Papago Indian Reservation in southern Arizona. From the description of Tenney papers, 1884-1923.
